She worked in Birmingham, Paris, Munich, Istanbul and Princeton before taking up her current position as Professor of Late Antique and Byzantine Studies at King's College London. Themes common all over its long histrory are explained, so that the reader gets a sense of what it was to live in Constantinople, and what it meant to be "Roman". The book can get heavy on the religious problems between eastern and western churches, but it gives information on the place of Byzantium in our own western history.
